Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, convened a high-level engagement with members of Umoja wa Amani Kwanza East Africa, representing partner states of the East African Community. The interaction focused on strategic matters of regional integration, with particular emphasis on strengthening the Customs Union.
During the discussions, delegates presented topical issues including the establishment of a single currency, the need for a permanent home for Umoja wa Amani Kwanza within the Ministry of East African Affairs, and the importance of ensuring flexibility in the free movement of goods and persons as stipulated in the EAC Treaty.
Rt. Hon. Kadaga, who is also the new Chairperson of the Council of East African Community Ministers, applauded the delegation for their
contributions and welcomed them warmly to Uganda. She noted with concern the issues raised, assured the delegates that their submissions would be taken into consideration, and emphasized Uganda’s readiness to support initiatives that advance unity, prosperity, and deeper integration across the region.
